The second amendment

The second amendment has given the ordinary citizens of USA the power of issuing death penalties as they see fit. With nearly 300 million weapons spread all over the country, there are potentially 300 million people ready to execute their given right to execute. They become, with an

In 1791 the ratified the amendment stating that; “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

This was more than 200 years ago and instigated to ensure the security of the newborn states. With virtually non-existing armies or even an adequate police force, the security of the state was, in one sentence, handed over to the public.

That meant that every man with a gun was the law. The reigning law was always the law of the strongest man. Weather he was morally sound or not.

Today, the circumstances are totally different. The armies and the police force are established all over the country, leaving the reason for a right to bear arms effectively vanished.

Harvard Injury Control Research Center have listed 11 firearms research surveys of gun threats and self-defense, ending in the following statements.

  1. Guns are not used millions of times each year in self-defense
  2. Most purported self-defense gun uses are gun uses in escalating arguments, and are both socially undesirable and illegal
  3. Firearms are used far more often to intimidate than in self-defense
  4. Guns in the home are used more often to intimidate intimates than to thwart crime
  5. Adolescents are far more likely to be threatened with a gun than to use one in self-defense
  6. Criminals who are shot are typically the victims of crime
  7. Few criminals are shot by decent law-abiding citizens
  8. Self-defense gun use is rare and not more effective at preventing injury than other protective actions

These conclusions clearly shows that a rule written more than 200 years ago, gives the wrong people too much power over their fellow citizens today. It’s clear that guns today are not being only used in defense, but mostly in offense. The amendment was meant to give a righteous man an opportunity to defend himself against the criminals, which today uses the very same amendment to intimidate the same righteous man.

In the US there are more than one mass shooting a day. In the first four months of 2022 the were 202 mass shootings, with a total of 221 dead, and 790 wounded. (Wikipedia) A mass shooting is in most terms defined of three or four victims of gun violence in a short period of time.

Everyone who are arguing for the existence of the second amendment, are giving acceptance to every gun related death in the country, including mass shootings. The National Rifle Association of America (NRA) has become a prominent gun rights lobbying organization, increasingly criticized by gun control and gun rights advocacy groups, political commentators, and politicians. The organization has been the focus of intense criticism in the aftermath of high-profile shootings, such as the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting and the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, after which they suggested adding armed security guards to schools.

Undoubtedly, guns are meant mainly for defense and hunting. Today no American state needs an armed public to defend from invaders, intruders, thieves, and thugs, as the early settler had to. What external danger is lurking in the shadows threatening the peace of any US state today? Not one demanding that a public armament.

Any human deciding that another human must die, has really emitted a death penalty. By killing said person, he has executed the verdict. Guns are solely designed for killing. By widely endorse an armament of the public, politicians have transferred the power to be the judge, the jury and the executioner of a death penalty, to anyone wearing a gun. Being at the loosing end of an petty argument, may be enough to arise such emotional storm.

Given humans total submission to be governed by its own set of feelings of the moment, privately issued death sentences like this are more than likely to become a harsh reality. Affections seem to rank higher on the list of what to consider, than the threat of long prison terms or even the law’s own death penalty. In a split second one man has become a murderer. Taking the same situation in consideration, but without guns, both parties will live to se another day, and the aggression will subside with time. Lives are saved.

Giving 300 million, or more, people guns and tell them to use them as a defense only, is like giving a young boy a water pistol, and tell the toddler not to use it on the other kids. Yeah, go figure!

To remedy gun violence by introducing more guns, is like give a fat person more food to slim or give a drowning man more water.
